I'm curious about how we are in cafe online. From my perspective, the world cafe community has a unique opportunity to offer the online world a social space that is shaped by a specific intention and container that is the essence of world cafe.

What is that and how can it show up here? What is the space that you who is reading this would like to create here? How would you like for it to feel? What would make this as alive and juicy for you as sitting at a table with markers and flowers between us and a meaningful question guiding us? What supports awakening and engaging collective intelligence through conversation? How can this platform of connectivity invite and support such emergence here? What is ‘being in café’ online? And what might be unique about being here in this online café (verses being in email or using another social media tools)?

A final question I have for those of you who are reading... what would entice you to want to keep returning to this site?

Thank you for the invitation and encouragement to play in this formative space.
curiously yours,
Hi all,

I would like to invite you to join a conversation on »The New Face of Community«.

Community is one of the central topics a group of practitioners gathering in Dresden, Germany, has been exploring over the last weekend in preparing a meeting of World Café and dialogue practioners in autumn. We haven't found any answers yet, but we found new questions. And we'd like to explore together with you if this is a topic that resonates with you.

Do we know how to create and maintain communities?
What is the relation between shared meaning and community?
We know how to behave in associations, but do we still know how behave in communities? What would be possible if we could find ways to transcend competition?
Why is community important?
What kind of communities do we need in order to contribute to a sustainable world? And how do we create them?
What is the relation of dialogue and the new face community?
What is the relation between leadership and the new face of community?

Just looking at this website, a new set of questions is emerging:
What is the essence of an Online community?
Is it similar or different from a not-online community?
How can we find out together if there is an answer to these questions?

Well, this is the beta team, isn't it? Could we create a beta team to test new communities in general?

I am looking forward to have conversations on this topic. If you feel slightly overwhelmed by this lot of questions, could you be interested in finding out about some underlying structures in this chaos?

I just wonder under which category this conversation should be located. For the moment I think »Ideas and Passions« could be a good category. I think this conversation should center around the application of World Café. World Café – what for? Why do we think World Café is wildly important?

Warm best wishes from Germany,
I would love to hear from folks who've graphically recorded World Cafes - how do you approach it, what do you find works best, what innovations have you come up with to enhance the experience, etc. etc?

The challenge for me is always how to manage the tsunami of information that comes out during the final harvest. Even when I collect ideas at the end of each round and start getting them up on the chart, there is still that big burst at the end, and I feel like I need 8 hands to capture it…

Looking forward to hearing from anyone with ideas - including those who may not have graphically recorded Cafes themselves but have hosted or otherwise participated in dialogues where the visual recording was done particularly well!
Thanks,
Pedagogical approach to dialog
how to "teach" dialog? i.e. How to develop competencies and posture necessary for deepest dialogue
what discoveries have we made?
we will boost our capacity to create a vibrant culture of dialog around us.

My intention was always to make my new buddy feel welcome - bringing a friendly and warm, heart-felt "tone" to my messages and customizing my responses to each person so they would feel unique and cared for.

Anytime I gave new instructions to my buddy, I would always include links to the place on the website I was referring to so they didn't have to guess where it was.

As I got to know my new buddy and what their needs and contributions were, I began looking for who to connect them with in the community, or find events they might be interested in. Perhaps this is more relevant to Mentoring, but sometimes there's a little of both roles going on.

Many of you will be very comfortable with the technology yourself, but others may be new to it, like I am. My own inexperience made me especially patient with my buddies - they may need to ask you a question more than once, or they may not "get it" quickly, so you may have to say it in a different way. Be sensitive to your buddy's pace because people learn in different ways and at different speeds.

These are some of my main "tips" to start you off. I hope you will all enjoy being a buddy as much as I have! A survey on education for sustainable development (test version 1.6) is online. The objective is to gather an inventory of critical issues that frequently emerge in sustainable development. The survey is based on the eight UNESCO "key action themes" for the "Decade of Education for Sustainable Development" (2005-2014).
The eight UNESCO themes are as follows:
My main question is about the overwhelming ugliness of most of these squatter cities. No matter how much "vitality" there is in a place, a constant assault of sordid impressions is not good for the soul. Neither is lack of access to at least a little bit of nature, such as a park. Much as I admire Stewart, I feel he is overly concerned with mere survival. PowerPoint has a bad rep. Media critic Edward Tuffte has estimated that on any given day in America there are 70 million ppt presentations, and we know that most of them are lousy. Tuffte calls ppt 'evil.'
Having said all that, I'm attaching a ppt slideshow that I've used to help illustrate the conversation process on the first day of a new cafe. It moves quickly, and it introduces the WC process to the group.
Our regional cafes have been gatherings of people who have a vested interest in teaching about the Holocaust and who are potential agents of change: college and university professors, educational leaders of Holocaust-related organizations, representatives from state departments of education, and secondary-level educators who are well-versed in Holocaust history and pedagogy. Our goals are to 1) Get the players in the same room and facilitate a conversation, 2) Explore topics about which we are knowledgeable and passionate, and 3) Explore the possibilities of working collaboratively to ensure that the lessons of the Holocaust are taught responsibly in schools.

I'd like to know what you think of the intro and to offer it as a model to anyone who might find it useful.
I will be attending Fielding Graduate University and earning my PhD in Human and Organization Systems. Juanita has been an inspiration to me in my interest in research including World Cafe work and in my choice of Fielding. Thank you Juanita. I also want to give special thanks to Dave for helping me to embrace my elderhood and to Tom for the feedback to quit looking outside of myself for answers that I can and should find inside. All three have a hand in my decision to move ahead with my PhD and let go of my doubts and commit. I am confident that I can and will make a significant difference in this world and am very excited to continue my journey.
I want to offer a special thank you to Amy for embracing my interest in The World Cafe and offering ideas as I explore my research question for my PhD. Thank you Amy. I hope to have more conversations as I can learn so much from you. And thank you for moving to Ning. A much!!! better platform for this community. Good decision.
