Hi All
I have been doing my own personal research into the causes and prevention of cancer.
Seems to me that it is attributed to about 3 main causes: stress, environmental factors (eg workplace toxins) and diet.
Heredity is only considered to be attributable to 10% of cancer cases, according to what I've read.
I want to share this video from
http://www.ted.com/ . If you have not heard of Ted yet, it's a forum where people with new ideas and research, make public presentations on their work.
Look at :
http://www.ted.com/talks/william_li.htmlwhere Dr William Li talks about angiogenesis and the anti-agiogenic drugs that they are developing.
Angiogenesis is the process by which cancer cells are fed by blood vessels and the purpose of the anti-angiogenic drugs is to cut off the blood supply to the cancers, thereby reducing them.
But more interestingly Dr Li talks about the Foundation's research into the anti-angiogenic properties of certain foods. He refers to studies, including one from Harvard University, which showed that consuming cooked tomatoes 2-3 times a week reduced prostate cancer growth in men by up to 50%.
Here is a link to Dr Li's slide listing the growing list of foods known to reduce cancer:
http://blog.ted.com/2010/02/dr_william_lis.phpI also did a blog on cooking with love , and co-incidentally fighting cancer when you include the known 'anti-cancer' foods in your diet.
See here for the link:
http://my2senseandcentsmaking.blogspot.com/2010/05/cook-artist-how-...I believe that when we are dealt the cancer card and it's our time to go, well we have to go.
But I also believe that if there are things that are within our personal control, that we can do to prevent ourselves from succumbing to this painful disease, then we should seek out all ways possible.
In my research as a humble individual who seeks to find out more, I have seen enough to convince me that including certain foods in my diet may prevent the trigger which causes the cancer cells that we all have in our bodies, from multiplying out of control.
The more you search and share what you know, the more information reaches others in a place like the World cafe.
There was a time when cancer was just a word for another terminal disease and it did not bother me.
But now I have reason to fear this and if I can share information to increase awareness of how important it is to change our lifestyles, then maybe some people will be be interested enough to perk up and make the change.
Stress is the next big factor that contributes to this disease and there's much that can be said on that topic. I won't try to proselytize because we all know that we should slow down. I do know that our jobs prevent us from doing this....mine did for most of my life.
But we do have the ability to step back for a moment and look, really look at how we live our daily lives in the context of what we want to get out of it.
If you take the time to ask yourself the question "what do I want my life to be" and the answer includes 'health' with 'wealth' and 'love', then it's a matter of starting with a small change.
There's so much more that I can say on this topic but i hope to hear some other views to start a conversation.
