ideal learning
I would like to engage in a dialogue concerning the learning revolution that has started. what does the ideal learning (education) look like? what is needed for the 21st century? do we need public policy and schooling?

I am Freirean in approach to my practice and research. Worthwhile studying Carl Rogers as well. I think you will find him enlightening. So here are my thoughts: Feminist and indigenous ways of knowing are critical to our future. You will find these epistemologies important as we look at social justice and social transformation. You might also explore beyond constructivist epistemology an emerging understanding of the importance of boarderlands and inquiry epistemologies. Then as far as learning theory beyond Freire and Rogers, I would suggest a deep dive into Experiential Learning by Kolb and then Conversational Learning by Kolb et all.

Do you really mean 'feminist' ways of knowing, or more 'feminine' ways of knowing? Could you explain a little more? As a woman I have my own thoughts and experiences on this, but would like to hear yours...

Ria, with what I have read "womens ways of knowing" or feminist epistemology tracks fairly closely with Freire. My first introduction was with Bell Hooks, and I was a bit shocked at what I did not know. The feminist movement in the 70's as I understand it has really paved the way for the expansion of alternate ways of knowing that reject the positivist white male European accepted ways of knowing in the western world. As I grew up learning disabled, I too have a different way of knowing that has been rejected by the same establishment even though I am a white male of European decent. I would be happy to explore this further with you. I hope you are well. Thank you for the note.

It seems that we are indeed on the verge of a global revloution of learning. we should really try and gather everyones thoughts in one place, thus they can then be transformed into something tangible, if you have any further thoughts, they would be grateful received.

Glyn, I appreciate the link to Sir Ken Robinson. I am currently researching and writing a paper on redesigning how we educate our learning disabled children based on American Indian educational paradigms. I have read extensively and am starting to write. I grew up learning disabled and even now our culture considers that I am broken and in need of fixing. These wonderful children do not deserve to grow up feeling broken when the absolutely are not. If interested read if you can find Greg Cajete's Look to the Mountain. Amazon on the secondary market is the only place to find as it has been out of print for quite a while. A wonderful book and absolutely not accepted by western educational institutions. Take care.

I too am well-grounded in Freire, Rogers, and DeBono... and, am very interested in and grateful for your pointer to David Kolb's work. It looks highly relevant to my own lines of inquiry... (just looked up his books on Amazon and they seem very pricey but well-worth it!)

Humans need to be taught creative thinking skills - specifically as a subject. We've got someone who has spent their life originating and testing ways to teach this subject. Someone who predicted the ways the brain was designed to work - which was vindicated as MRI verified ALL of his theories more than twenty years after he published them.
That person is Edward de Bono. He's still alive, but he's given up seeing the advantages of his work being brought to world education. He's succeeded in Venezuela, China, and parts of Australia, but not in the rest of the world, strangely enough.
There seems to be too much resistance from established bureaucracy to implement the advantages of ANY if his innovations in the USA and UK, except on a grass-roots level.
Since de Bono is known as the "grandfather" of creative thinking and the originator of the word "lateral thinking," he's often not credited with the work that is driving other newer innovators in the field today. It is very stimulating what Edward de Bono has to offer education by his methods of teaching creative thinking skills. Check out his eighty plus books, his various websites and other sites run by his qualified trainers of his work...such as www.cortthinking.com

If you'd like to check out and example of some specific creative thinking skills that are already developed and available to be taught... a qualified trainer of de Bono's (Graeme Allan) is doing a series (already going for over a month now) teaching specific strategic thinking skills.
