Hosting Conversations about Questions that Matter
Hello!
I am not sure if this is the way to start a conversation but I will learn soon. My name is Marcela von Vacano and I was born in Cochabamba, Bolivia. I am a bilingual elementary school teacher/ specialist in Arlington Public Schools and I have two daughters and a son. My husband, Arturo von Vacano is a writer.
As you know, many countries in Latin America were ruled by dictators, Bolivia was one of them. So in 1980, we had to escape Bolivia and became political refugees in the U.S. My husband was prohibited from writing and was jailed. We were very fortunate to be able to be accepted as political refugees here.
I have been able to obtain three master's degrees in education. My main interest is to educate language minority students so t they can become professionals. That way they can have a better life and contribute to this country.
I truly believe that equality in education made this country great.
Marcela von Vacano
