Hello everyone. It is Eshan new member.
I am EVS Eurepean Volunteer Service) participant in Lille, France. I work in PIJ - Point Information Jeunesse (Youth Information Centre). My mission is activities with youth,to help people to find job, to develop solidarity, promote tolerance and active citizenship among youth, publicity against discrimination, to promote Europe in the youth sector etc.
I planed to organize a Café World Workshop in october during my EVS. And I would like you to advice me and to share your opinions about it here, PLEASE!
Thanks very much for your advices and sharings !
This is the first planning of my Café World Workshop:

WORLD CAFÉ – Breaking stereotypes and building tolerance

GOAL: To fight discrimination and to favor the social promotion of the most vulnerable publics (young people, women, unemployment, and immigrants), to develop solidarity and promote tolerance among young people, to foster social cohesion and mutual understanding between young people.

HOW to organize: You get into groups of four, and the questions are posed by Mr. X. The first, these groups solve questions, and then, discuss the particular theme for that round. After 10 minutes, all participants (students), except the table host, need to move to a different table. Participants (students) should randomly disperse and be in different groups every round.

Round’s Themes What to do

1. Stereotypes and discrimination

a)     Describe what are stereotypes and discrimination in words and drawings.

b)    Did you meet these cases and what would you do if you meet such as conditions?

2. Breaking stereotypes and building tolerance

Discuss and write down how to break stereotypes and to build tolerance?

3. Presentation about discrimination.

4. The ending

At the end of the workshop to ask 3 flip charts (each manned by a facilitator) and the Hosts stand in the middle of the tables, give to them writing questions and ask:

a)     What discoveries did you make you today?

b)    What themes did you notice and take with you from table to table? What themes emerged for you?

c)     What will you take with you when you leave the room? What can you commit to today? Also to write down some key words as followings:

  1. Teenagers. 2. Your impression in 30 words. 3. 5 key points of your learning today.

HOST? Mr. X will select one student in each of the initial groups to act as the table host. These students do not switch groups in between rounds. They have two roles:

1. Welcome the new students to the table each round.

2. Explain to each new group what the previous group concluded.

HOW TO APPRECIATE? : Each participate needs to turn in a sheet of paper called the “cafe menu”. This menu needs to have each round clearly marked, with each problem worked out, and the conclusions of the group regarding the theme. These individual menus will be turned in and graded for completeness and neatness.

Hello Elshan,

You have done a big job already!

Just a few points that catched my eye...

- maybe the goal is not 'to fight discrimination', but to discover some new and deeper meanings and experiences around the topic of discrimination?

- normally it is not Mr.X or the fascilitator who appoints the table host - you just ask at the end of the last round who wants to be a table host (and explain it then). If you do it upfront, people think they have a 'special' role and are not spontanuous anymore.

- you might think about how to frame your questions for the different rounds in a way that opens people's minds, evocing new thinking etc. not just what they already know

- in that regard it is also important to explain the café etiquette, which will lead to more dialogue, instead of discussion (which means 'to chop into pieces').

I would advice to get together with someone who has some experience with World Café beforehand and talk your design through with them. You can hopefully find someone via the members page here or on the Art of Hosting Ning site.

Hello, Ria. Thank you for your response and advice!
 - As i write in my profile one of my mission is to fight against discrimination, and of course, to discover new things and also to improve fighting methods of discrimination.
- Surely, there will be the tables hosts, and  besides those 2 persons (men and other one) will rule this work café. I called these 2 persons Mr. X.
- I also want to direct people's attention to the goal not to pull of the theme.
- Yes, you are right it must be the rules of etiquette not to lead more dialogue
- i will also continue to learn more about cofé world.

Hi Elshan,

We're on a big holiday weekend here in the US which is why you may not as yet have received many responses to your wonderful work.  Thank you, Ria, for being available there in Europe to respond.  Elshan, I suggest you also post this message and request on the Methods for Strategic Collaboration group.  They have a lot of members and more people would see it. Just go over to that group...join it, and then you can post your message.

I'm also going to forward your message to some folks who can be of support, including some there is Europe, which I will do later in the day when I return.

With warmest regards and best wishes for a fantastic gathering!

Juanita
