Hosting Conversations about Questions that Matter

Hello everyone. I've not been present for a while, but that has nothing to do with a lack of interest in the topic.

I've had several ideas for papers/articles related to TWC (with some degree of TWC and research as a theme or undercurrent) but am having a lot of difficulty finding likely outlets. My recent publications have been in peer-reviewed journals and edited books. That has been interesting, but I can't help but feel the audiences are narrow in scope.

I bought a copy of the Writer's Guide and the learning/training/OD/HR sorts of publications seem to be quite mainstream and not necessarily wanting to provoke thought or stimulate dialogue.

Has anyone found trade or consumer publications that might be suitable? Or are there other ideas for peer-reviewed publications? Or a new book? Or people who might like to explore co-authoring for any media? I might be able to use some of my recent research (not TWC-based) as a kind of mirror for reflecting on cafe as research.

Hello, Alice,

There is a group of about twelve people connected to Fielding, The World Cafe, and and a desire to connect the two through research. At the moment we are exploring inter-generational differences and ways to deepen the conversation. John Inman is organizing these phone conversations. Please write to him for more information to see if we are a good match for you and your work, writings and aspirations.

Hello Elva. Perhaps there are two, somewhat-connected origins of this group? I was invited to the first gathering of practitioners who spent a weekend exploring TWC as research in Anaheim. Many of those people are in this group. I did not sign up for the inter-generational project but am connected with others that are somewhat dormant at the moment. The FGU link there was sponsorship by ISI.

I am connected with John, initially via twitter and then through conversations as he went through the application process for HOD. Thanks for the link though; it is a good connection!

And I already know there are strong links to both my practice and scholarship. There was almost a very strong connection through my dissertation, but--unfortunately--I wanted to work through a nomination process to remove some obvious subjectivity concerns, so I did not end up with a core cafe person as a participant. Several were there in spirit though, and Fred Steier was my chair.

I could probably summarize my deepest interests here by describing them as at the intersection of TWC as research, complexity thinking, learning & innovation, and principles from the natural world.

So I am now looking at the next step. In our retreat we talked about exploring and publishing more on this theme (TWC as research) both in scholarly journals and as thoughtful scholar-practitioners. I am not a full time faculty member and have been "funding my publication habit" which is part of the motivation for wanting to move into (or help to create) more accessible and impactful writing. (I do plan to continue with some scholarly writing so am very much open to collaborations there as well, as time permits).

Does that help to clarify?
Hi Alice...
How great to learn of your interest in this! Let's perhaps set up a phone visit with John Inman via skype to explore what might be possible here...
With fondest regards from the mountains of North Carolina,
Juanita
Hello Juanita; good to hear from you. I floated a WC book idea by a couple of people a year ago and got mixed reactions, so went on to other things.

The closest link right now is that I am starting to work on a fieldbook where some world cafe content would be great. Not far enough along to start asking questions yet, but hopefully soon. And we should have a chat some time soon about materials I'm developing for a cafe-related concept. Not sure where I might fit into current projects in this site (and I've not been actively monitoring).

This is a busy time of year for me. I'm getting ready for the face-to-face portion of the park system leadership course, which is one of those all-consuming consulting gigs (and not pro bono work for a change!)
Please keep me in the loop of what is unfolding. I'm holding the Research thread that is unfolding in the Art of Hosting community... not about publishing yet, but who knows what can grow???
