Wilfried Wilkins, Feb 3:

End poverty - Wouldn´t that be a brilliant theme for one of the next WC?!

Ria Baeck, Feb 4:

and what has ending poverty to do with the production of food, our own relationship with food and the land; and then what have World Café practitioners to do with that?

Where would YOU like to take this topic? Is something sparked for you by what Wilfried and/or Ria said? Are there other topics you'd like to explore in March's Community Cafe?

I learned about the work of Nancy Kline today, whose work is focused around what she calls "Time to Think"; creating the environment that allows us the spaciousness to really think together about the things that concern us, individually and collectively. I like that idea very much, and personally feel there is a great affinity there with the World Cafe's principle of "creating hospitable space", which in my view is really about creating the conditions for deep conversation and collaborative thinking to emerge.

This thread is to explore the topic for this Cafe, so that its most relevant and meaningful to us. Amy and I thought about starting the new year with the overall topic of Vision. And to see the personal vision in relation to the collective vision and maybe the collective needs.

So starting points could be questions like:

"How does your vision for yourself connect to your vision for your community, or for the world?", or "How does individual vision connect to/inform/interact with collective vision?"

you are warmly invited to share how this lands on you and how we could shape it in a way that is most inviting and most relevant for us to have a Community Cafe around...

How about a cafe exploring the potentialities and limitations of the virtual world for creating deep social, political and/or economic transformation? Obviously this project and the second life work you have done is directly connected to the idea that these are powerful new tools and well worth developing. How far can we expect to go with them?

I recently read Clay Shirky's "Here Comes Everybody," which makes the case for our being in the midst of a true social revolution due to living in a wired world. Then there's Jaron Lanier's "You Are not a Gadget," which takes a somewhat dimmer view I think, although I have only read an excerpt (pdf attached).

The question for our first month’s Inquiry Circle is:

”What crucial conversations should we as a global community be having in light of what recently happened in Haiti, Chile and now Turkey? What are the critical questions we should be engaging in relation to these?"
