This process is inspired by work I've started with the good folks of the Mycelium School, including World Cafe Community stalwart Ashley Cooper. We're talking about what it means to "work mycelialy," i.e. like the network of tiny threads that make up the main "body" of a fungal organism (and play a key role in composting dead plant matter as well as being the source of mushrooms).

We're talking about what it means to "work mycelialy," i.e. like the network of tiny threads that make up the main "body" of a fungal organism (and play a key role in composting dead plant matter as well as being the source of mushrooms).

This has led to my realization that WC is a wonderful process for weaving lots of threads together and thus a great candidate for putting the mycelium metaphor into action. Here's what I just proposed to our little group, that can serve as a point of attachment for a more concrete conversation around what might be possible if we reimagine the WC form for virtual and hybrid contexts:

A “Mycelial Café” (just made that up!) would involve a number of people hosting one or more small group conversations (in-person and/or virtually) over perhaps a week’s time. During and/or just after each one they create some kind of harvest (“tablecloth”) online (Hackpad is a platform that could work well for this) that could be shared with other participants. We would have one or at most two questions that everyone discussed. We could come together a week after the Talk Purpose event* for a final conversation on Maestro where we did perhaps one more round of small group dialogue followed by an extended harvest. In that closing full group conversation, we would value and appreciate the weaving we have done for its own sake, talk about what we’re learning about working mycelialy, and, yes, hunt for “mushrooms. ” No pressure or expectations that they will emerge, just a comfortable knowledge that, if the conditions were right, they will be there, and perhaps even in profusion.

*Note: Talk Purpose is a regular "fishbowl" style conversational gathering that Ashley and Co. convene. In this example, it serves as a conversation starter. That seems like a nice add-on, but not necessarily essential to the form.
World Cafe online Community Cafestag:www.theworldcafecommunity.org,2011-02-06:3306069:Topic:360112011-02-06T00:18:54.487ZAmy Lenzohttp://www.theworldcafecommunity.org/profile/AmyLenzo

February's topic was fairly open since we haven't had a Community Cafe for many months - the questions focused on 1) what was bringing people to this Cafe, 2) what question or issue had been engaging or concerning them lately, and 3) what had they learned in response to this question or issue.

I found it interesting that given this open format what many of the participants wanted to talk about was the online medium itself.

Listening in to the small group conversations, which I do regularly to make sure everyone has settled in ok and to gauge the "energy" in the room, I noticed that it was a topic that ran through each of the conversations at some point in every round, and it made me wonder if perhaps we should host a Cafe focused specifically on this topic?

Wow! We just finished a World Cafe on Skype for the European Salon happening in Vienna next month (and online here). As one of the Table Hosts it was a powerful experience for me of collaborative leadership, deep dialogue, and community building - the very topics it was focusing on.

The Cafe Host Ulrich Soeder has started a story about it in StoryNet, which he will be filling out with key points from the harvest and some of the gorgeous graphic recording which happened there. I know there will be conversation in the European Salon group, but I thought I'd open a conversation here in our group as well. Perhaps we could talk about it from a slightly different point of view...

My thoughts are to focus on the experience itself, as a particular way of having a World Cafe conversation - did it work for you? What were the highlights or places of disappointment for you? What are your thoughts about why things were particularly satisfying and why they were not? Both are helpful for deepening our learning about working with deep dialogue online.

Here are some of my reflections to start us off:

The technology was cumbersome in the beginning. It was hard to get that many people (22) on the same Skype conference call without them dropping off. When we were able to quickly morph into Table Hosts calling together their tables for the first round the technology process went much easier, and I thought the conversation at both my tables was phenomenal.

I did miss having the orientation that was planned for the larger group, and getting a chance to connect in a space of deeper dialogue with the people from Russia that were there, an opportunity which was especially exciting for many of us.

One piece of feedback I heard over and over was how surprised people were that it was possible to feel this "connected" - in their bodies and in their hearts - in this medium. That is always gratifying to hear, even though to me it's not surprising any more because I've experienced it many many times.

We anticipated the same technology problem with harvesting in a large group, so we spontaneously decided to break into two smaller groups for the harvest, and I ended up hosting one of them without any preparation, which was less of a challenge for me that it would have been even a year ago - I must be getting more experienced at this! :-).

In retrospect I wish I would have chosen a more structured way to elicit the harvest so that we could have brought out more of the "spirit" of a true World Cafe harvest, which I think can be a phenomenal weaving of pattern and subtle linkages, but it was very juicy as it was, and I think almost everyone felt the Cafe as a whole was a great success.

Other thoughts from those that were there? Questions or comments from those that were not?

I really appreciated all those who came from this group as a way to experience a World Cafe online, and I'm particularly curious about these "first time" experiences ... what was it like? Did it meet your expectations? Were there any surprises, and if so what were they? Do you have suggestions for how to make it better next time?

Warm Hugs,
