The Regenerative Landscape - City Managers talk about the future health of our communities!

Hi all!

The Regenerative Landscape was a great discussion about creating a healthy future through re-designing the way we think, interact, and regenerate our communities within landscape infrastructures.

I wish you all could have been there! If you are interested in following the developments of this conversation, check this website for follow-up conversations. Pictures of the event.

Let’s listen to each other and work to solve problems.

We invited 32 professionals to participate in a collaborative conversation about our collective
future. Ten public agencies or institutions have been invited. Each
agency brought three people, each representing a different department
that has responsibility over land or resource management. For example, a
city sent someone from parks, water/utilities and public works or
planning.

A multi-disciplinary, shared conversation that will help us use our work
to improve the health of our communities.

How do we build the concept of regeneration into our built environment?

With new legislative mandates and our desire for a healthier environment, we are all furiously planning for a
more sustainable future. This planning requires better integration of
resources and actions—we cannot rely on past concepts to fix our current
problems. As either a public or private organization, we can no longer
do business as usual.

The legislative mandates show us the goals we need to meet—but they don’t provide the tools or implementation strategies to reach these goals. In some cases, goals from one mandate might even be at odds with the requirements of another mandate.

As the paradigm shifts, we need to better understand the ecological services the land can provide to create a
healthier human habitat. New solutions require current knowledge, coupled with science, technology and collaboration.

Concepts of sustainability and the landscape are becoming more deeply understood and the landscape’s enormous role in providing ecological services is emerging. But realizing these enhanced ecological services means rethinking our infrastructure requirements and creating new land use patterns.

We use the term “Regenerative Landscape” to embody this new way of thinking.
