it was developed by Christopher Alexander, an architect, and first published in this book: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Pattern_Language meanwhile he wrote some more books and the idea of pattern language travelled far beyond architecture... really interesting field! i heard about a gathering soon with Christopher to translate some patterns into the social domain...
