Hosting Conversations about Questions that Matter

Dear all,

a new team of people has formed to host a second European Salon in October in Egensbach near Nürnberg, Germany.

There has been an extended silence after Reichenau concerning the conversation on this topic. When we took up our conversations this summer, we soon realised that the topic is still of vital interest to us.

We finally created a documentation of the Reichenau Salon to be able to build on what we explored last autumn.

Please find the Reichenau documentation below. Let us take it as a starting point to take up our inquiry on dialogue, leadership and community.

In exploring a new face of community, new voices and faces who contribute are welcome, live or online. If you are new in this group, please join the conversation!

Unlike an executive summary, you will find pictures, recordings, some hints on what might have happened in this circle ... So if you have questions, comments, if you feel inspired, share your impressions and thoughts right here.

I am looking forward to a new round of a conversation that matters!

Cheers, Ulrich

Great! Thank you Ulrich for your comments! I see how we are preparing the ground for a possible new phase of community. I really look forward to exploring this!

Your last comment is wonderful and I can connect well with it! Is it of value to look to the past? See what kind of communities we have experienced and why they have stopped working for us?

I like your idea of competing commitment! Highly interesting!

Cheers!

Hi all,

One technical comment. Twitter button is not connecting on this page. I feel that it is important and necessary t o be able to twiit this event.

Viktor
thanks Viktor, can you please elaborate what you mean with twitter button? we will certainly have a hashtag for live-tweets from and inputs into the event...
"Victors scientific Elaborate":

On this page on the top, just below Ulrich welcoming letter/statement in the left hand side, there are 3 buttons:

Share, Twitter and Facebook.

When you click on twitter button (I am sure you know this) the page (this page) automatically goes on the twitter itself.
On our (this) button, that is not the case, so we are unable to share and RT this event.
I think that button needs to work and here it is why;

Some of you might know already this people, their project is called 8Q or 8 questions http://www.now-here.com/8qs/.

Some of you might know another bunch of people: http://www.plexusdc.org/.

Both these groups are working on exactly the same thing as this event. The second group coincidentally is in the same week as our event.
So I think once you check their links you'll see that 3 local groups together make a global group with a purpose.

And finally, let me share the contribution to this blog
http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/tipping_point_author_malcolm_g... from yesterday:

I like analogies.

Lets take a 8cm long garlic chopping knife (a tool).
In my drawer is useless, in the sink is dirty and stinky, in the hands of a soldier….and in the hands of maestro chef, well who is buying the wine then?
The knife on its own does not make the finger licking dish.

So our Soc. Media (SM) tools (Facebook, Twitter, linked….) are more or less like the knife. Often times they remind me of the old media. More marketing, more sale, brainwashing…etc. Do you remember the movie Network?

So on their own (without the skilful hand) they are nothing really new in the context of social change. Now here comes the braking point I believe.

If appropriately used and guided by a skilful chef (I will stop with the analogy here and call my chef a systemic leader) SM tools could and I believe will provide a platform for staging the biggest consciousness and social change the humanity has seen. Let me just add here that the signs of this are emerging and they are visible in small numbers.

If you ask your self how, I would like to share some of my experiences.

For social change (we also call it cultural transformation) several things need to be in place:

1) Full system participation (this is where the SM tools become the platform for global alignment).
Just imagine the power of numbers. Imagine 100 million of people being lead and focused on a single issue, topic, problem….unfortunately this happens only in times of major crisis and disasters. We don’t have to wait for that asteroid that comes in our way, you know.

Anyone who has experience with appreciative inquiry, or open ended inquiry or world café discussions will know how powerful a single question can be in order to create positive change and attitude within a group.
Now imagine that instate of the current confusion on the SM (by the way this is only a reflection of our personal and collective confusion and lack of global systemic leadership) we start to use the SM in a coherent and aligned way and start to ask questions that matter on corporate/local/global level. This will start a process of inclusion and WHOLE SYSTEM PARTICIPATION and will tap the collective intelligence of our employees/people on the planet.
By the way, culture is extremely difficult to change without the whole system participation.

Further more, this process is also generating a systemic responsibility among the participants, which means that we do not have “a Leader” but rather a shared ownership and responsibility or a “systemic shared leadership”. This is how we’ll govern our organization, nation or the humanity. This is the social change we are talking about.

2) Commitment from the top Leadership of the system (organization, region, nation, the planet).
- In the company the CEO and the board of director must be inn.
- In the nation, the government, president, prime minister must be fully committed to the process, etc.
- On a global level, all must be inn, UN, Governments, IMF, Google, IBM, corporations…

3) Continuous Measurement of culture and values within the system.
This is available and the tools are incredible. In addition to this we need to follow the KPI (Key performance Indicators). This is also known and available.

In my opinion the weakest link in accomplishing this task is the lack of systemic leaders, but that is the part of evolution. For the moment we just need to stay present.

P.S.

Let me just say that this is not a theory. Over 2000 companies and some 60 nations are doing social transformation NOW. For those of you that are interested I will share links and case studies.

P.S.

Hi Viktor,

your question on the twitter button hit one of my blind spots. Actually I don't know what these buttons are for and I have never used them. Could you or anyone else provide something like a short user-manual?

Cheers, Ulrich
OK, this should be done over a skype or phone but lets try like this and lets make it practical:

Social Media (SM) sites are: Face book, Linked inn, Twitter, the blogs etc....

Every one please connect with me on them:

On Face book http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/COACH-ERA/272733111134
On Twitter http://twitter.com/coacheragroup
On Linked inn: http://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=8840686&locale=en_US&am...;
My blog: http://coachera.wordpress.com/2010/10/06/the-role-of-social-media-i...

At the present our European salon which I consider to be an extremely, I repeat extremely important event is looking like a cave man in his cave, isolated and not much exposed (if you haven't read my previous comment on social media I suggest you to do it, in order to understand what am I saying)

Now, if I (as I did) put the information about the event on Twitter (i did it manually since the button is not connecting right), on Face book where I am connected with hundreds of people, who are connected with hundred thousands more.....a so called virus = viral spread of informations will happen all around the net/globe.

Imagine the questions that you will be asking in the group of 20, are asked and answered all over the world in millions? I am sure you get the picture.

This is how we can create a Global Alignment, by Inquiring and asking the right questions, all over the world and by clicking those buttons and spreading the information to whoever is ready to use it and support it, not just the people in one room.

Social media is the platform.
World cafe is the systemic leader

That is why the twitter button needs to work.
By the way the face book connect OK.
Thank you, Viktor. Cave mans greetings, Ulrich
you are more than welcome

cave man2
thanks Viktor, i like analogies too :) and yes, that issue is certainly bubbling - i actually just found this article.

when i click on the twitter button under Ulrichs kick-off post of this thread it requires me to allow this Ning to have access to my Twitter account. if i go to "Share" and then click on Twitter it just fills out a tweet that i still have to press send to - so that option only uses an URL based function which is this: http://twitter.com/?status=thetextofyourtweet

how does it work differently for you Viktor?
When I click the twitter button on world cafe page it tells me

Last update failed to connect on twitter. This should not happen and it should connect and post on twitter instantly.
for me when i click on the twitter-button a little window opens right next to the button giving me a chance to edit the text and then i press on "Post" and a new little window opens asking me to connect to Twitter where i have to press "Connect" and then "Verify" on twitter.com
or maybe you rejected ning-access to your twitter.com earlier on some page and it remembers that? or maybe it is your browser?

cave-greetings as well :)
Wow, there is so much here i feel that direct contact (not just text) is needed here so I can understand you and the other way around.

skype maybe?
