The World Cafe Community

Hosting Conversations about Questions that Matter

Hi, all. I'm currently in the process of designing my first World Cafe, and I'd love some feedback on the questions I'm asking.

The Cafe is going to look at local food in the Eugene, OR, area through the lens of economics -- at the interaction of money and food. We're starting with a 30-minute panel conversation between four people involved in the local food system; a permaculturist, a farmer, a wholesaler, and the editor of an environmentalist magazine. After the panel, we'll open it up into three rounds of World Cafe conversation.
Questions for the initial panel:
  • Describe a day in your life when you went to bed excited about the ways you'd seen money and food interact. What did that day look like? What allowed it to happen?
  • What knowledge do you wish people had, to make those moments of excitement happen more often? Or, phrased another way, what knowledge most needs to be shared in order for the economy to become a helpful force for local food?
  • As a thought experiment, picture the five of us in June of 2022, looking back on the events of this summer. Imagine us saying to each other, "You know what? Back in the summer of 2012, we got it just right. We did exactly what needed to be done." What did we do, to give ourselves such a good memory?
  • And finally, what questions still need to be asked about economics and local food in Eugene?

Questions for the World Cafe:
  • What new piece of knowledge have you gained today that really stands out? How might this new piece of knowledge change you, your community, or Eugene?
  • What is the piece of knowledge that you feel you most need to gain, to reach a deeper understanding of this issue?
  • What are the actions that we (as individuals, as communities, and as a city) most need to take in order to engage in healthy ways with both food and money?

Are the questions too broad? Too narrow? How could I better tap the knowledge and energy of the group? Thanks in advance for any feedback!

Peace,

Patrick

It is only now that I read your questions...

What I miss a bit in the questions is the link with the knowledge - wisdom - intelligence that people already have from own experiences; and that can be woven together then with the new that they just heard... from there you get to the real collective wisdom...

just my two cents...
