Hosting Conversations about Questions that Matter

Hello, Methods Community,
I'm currently in the home stretch of completing my master's in OD at the University of San Francisco. I'm planning a major paper on World Cafe as an example of a highly effective large group intervention. One of the topics I must cover is "appropriate use of the intervention, including ethical considerations." I have a lot of ideas on what to write about appropriate use. It's the ethical considerations part that has me stumped. I haven't seen anything written about WC and ethical usage. Any ideas? I welcome your feedback and look forward to reading your comments!
Warm regards,
Janet Birgenheier

Janet, the nature of your question has opened a lot. Let us know where you go with this. You have certainly set me thinking about how ETHICS plays in the implementation of collective wisdom. Actually, all the shootings yesterday and today make me wonder about human ethics and individual access to conscience altogether. Yeech.

Janet, you actually have clarified a lot about what specifically we at Vistar Foundation can contribute on this subject. THANKS! (www.vistarfoundation.org). L

I'm happy to be helpful! Actually, it was the idea of our professor to include ethics in our papers that served as the catalyst for this rich online dialogue. Perhaps there is a way that I can post the finished paper online. It will be finished by Dec. 17.

Janet, that would be so interesting.

Ah, papers. I hope you not only get a great comment and grade, but also...let's see, a nice tiara???? What is is the degree you are working for?
I'm answering your most recent question here because there was no reply button on the site after your latest posting. I'm finishing a master's in OD at the University of San Francisco.

Is this OD as in Organizational Development? (I had to Google it.) Do you have a specific way you want to use this? I am interested since we are very interested in finding ways for people to meet beyond programming and ego...a vertical thrust, if you will...for only then can true change occur. So, I'm also interested in people and places recognizing the needs for new paradigms and ways of coming together.

Yes, OD is Organization Development. I plan to use World Cafe and other similar large-group interventions to facilitate organizational change by engaging stakeholders in visioning, strategic planning, planning change, etc. I see WC and other such methods as a way to gain commitment to change by involving stakeholders so they feel ownership of the change rather than pushing change down to them.

Really interesting. Is your basic question: "How can people be encouraged to embrace rather than resist change?" And is the answer you are testing: "Tapping into the satisfaction of creative ownership?"
Again, the "reply to this" button was missing, so I'm replying to a previous posting by you. The answer to both of your questions is "yes." I'm passionate about using WC to help stakeholders engage in the process and own the outcomes. I've been trained in WC by Christine Whitney-Sanchez, but because I've mostly been a graduate student for the past 21months, I haven't had a chance to use it. I'll be doing a mini-WC with my fellow students as part of the same assignment for which I'm writing the paper.

I will be interested to hear what you find. At some point, you might be interested in finding out about the Vistar Method of Communication. Right now its application has specifically been for individual change...level of Being questions...and the enormous implications of how we can BE at higher levels, in groups, together. How accessing the collective consciousness can bring us to new places entirely.

I've only been to one WC, and somehow the vision could not address how people actually "be" together. Perhaps there is some synthesis needed?

I love the word "stake holder" is interesting to me in that as human beings on this planet right now, we are all stake holders in evolution and survival.

PS, don't know why there is no reply button. My email is [email protected]. I am also on Face Book. Best, Lucinda
Hello all,

Aren't we mixing 'ethical' with different developmental levels here? If you want me to tell more about that, just let me know. i will be able to answer in a few weeks... just not now...

Ria, are you saying that one's ethics spring, in part, from one's developmental level? Please tell me more when you have time!
