The World Cafe Community

Hosting Conversations about Questions that Matter

With excitement I share with you all that I will be hosting a World Cafe for a group of 75-100 educators from across British Columbia, Canada this October. This will be the first event I've hosted with a large group and it will take place in a school gymnasium/classrooms. Please share your stories with me about hosting your first large event - I would love the inspiration!

Jenn :
three ideas that have been usefull to me :
1 I have used one minute of silence in the middle of Cafe in order to recover the search for insight and meaning.
2It has been usefull to me to repeat :" our conversation awakes a superior intelligence in the group."
3 Also the famous sentence of Suzuki: " Always return to the begginner mind . In the beginner mind there are many posibilities". Nice to share with you.

Nice Jenn...

I have worked with teachers and in schools here in BC with cafes over the past few years. Gyms are good spaces, but make sure you get small tables. Be arware that th acoustics in gyms can be challenging, but I love them as spaces because they are large, flexible and public.

On a series of cafes we did in Prince George last year around opening an Aboriginal choice school, some of the school hosts had kids make up centre pieces and table clothes, which was very good too.

Good luck and have fun with it. Large events are the best...lots of juice flows!

In Sundrie Alberta they converted the whole gym into a cafe atmosphere by working with local businesses to obtain potted trees, plants and patio lights - then we found 30 + small round tables
the process went really well, lots of great conversations - we then graphically recorded back their stuff but that was a bit slow and we lost some momentum - since then we handle the report back differently for groups over 50.
