Hosting Conversations about Questions that Matter
I wanted to canvas the facilitators out there and ask: How do you effectively transition from one question or topic, to another? I facilitated an event that went very well, but found that when it was time to move on to another topic, it was awkward cutting in the conversation to do that. Any suggestions out there?

I want to honor conversation so I am not inclined to announce a change without some warning and time to wind down. When the room conversation is nearly diminished... I say 15 seconds and we will change tables.

Permalink Reply by Tess Tobin on May 30, 2012 at 2:28pm Hi. My name is Tess Tobin and I am new to the World Cafe community. I am a librarian for the City University of NY and work with promoting information and library services to the underserved and linguisitically diverse communities. I want to bring the work of The World Cafe to a larger library audience since I feel our library communitites can benefit from more meaningful conversations.
I am organizing a program in Anaheim, CA on Sunday, June 24 from 1:30-3:30pm at the the American Library Association Annual Conference. The program is called Cultural Programming: How to Achieve Meaningful Dialogue at Your Library. I am looking for an additional panel member who will talk about The World Cafe and how librarians can use your philosophy to engage diverse patrons in conversations that matter. You would be asked to speak for 15 minutes with Q&A.
If you are interested, please contact me and we can talk further. My email address is [email protected]
Hi there,
During the introduction I introduced people to a lovely bell which would ring when it was time to change the discussion to another conversation question and/or move tables. This worked very well and was a gentle way of breaking into conversations which were flowing.
