The World Cafe Community

Hosting Conversations about Questions that Matter

This is a new conversation thread to capture in one spot cafe projects, ideas for cafes, and best practices for cafes. There is so much going on worldwide and virtually no one knows what is going on, nor are we learning from each other to move the cafe process forward into the world. We will start here then see if a group is in order. New and experienced practitioners alike are absolutely welcome to join the conversation.

I am planning a cafe in a new setting for me. A dear friend, an ELCA Lutheran pastor, is helping a congregation heal and rebuild and I have proposed a cafe to help him move the community together and start the healing process. I will be doing this the end of October and as we design and pull this project together I will keep you apprised. The question is critical here. He was going to bring the group together in a meeting and ask what went wrong. I squelched that right away. I proposed something like (and I would love to get your suggestions by the way) What does a healthy congregation look like? or What do we need to be doing to heal? or What do we need to be doing to draw into the congregation the diverse community that surrounds us? or What do we need to be doing to create a diverse and inclusive community?

Love to hear your ideas. Thank you.

Fabulous, John!

You are really approaching the questions for this World Cafe as an Appreciative Inquiry ... an approach which will give you a very different result than the "what went wrong" direction. I love your questions - especially the first one because it feels so freeing. To test what approach would be most generative, I ask myself each of the questions and listen to how my body responds...
