Geoffrey Berz replied to Peggy Holman's discussion 'Engaging Emergence: Turning Upheaval into Opportunity'
"OK! Let me restate as to try and best understand. The book draws on experiences of working with World Cafe, Open Space, ect. and defines a set of principals which are the sum of patterns observed through such practices(practices being world cafe,…"

Geoffrey Berz replied to Peggy Holman's discussion 'Engaging Emergence: Turning Upheaval into Opportunity'
"The tagline and what I deduce as the main tenet of this book is interesting to me. My guess is this book establishes a value system and methodology from which to deal with all of life's challenges. Is this the case? Or is the text more specific…"

Profile Information

Please indicate your World Café experience (ONLY IF YOU HAVE ACTUAL WORLD CAFE EXPERIENCE) in one or more of the following roles:
Host, Participant, I'm New to the World Cafe
If you are new to the World Cafe, would you please share how you heard about this community?
My Mother.
What field is the primary focus of your World Café work (ONLY CHECK AREAS WHERE YOU ARE ALREADY ACTIVELY USING WORLD CAFE PLEASE)?
Corporate, Online, Community
What knowledge, skills or resources would you like to contribute to the World Café community to help it grow and flourish?
I want to share with this community the phenomenon of how our private beliefs can become public at a lower cost to individuals than ever before. Because of this, via communication technologies such as World Cafe, we have the ability to organize collective action and collaboration to a profound degree. I want to encourage people to use the internet for these means and to find peaceful and nonviolent methods of conflict resolution.
What would you most like to receive from this community?
I want to know the depth of this community's faith in online organization, and our ability to act collectively for the causes which move us to in turn create tangible social and political change. In other words, I want to know if the people in this community view the internet as the most valuable medium for political and social change.

Welcome, Geoffrey!

I'd love to take up the conversation topic you raise about "the depth of this community's faith in online organization"...

On a personal level I certainly share your valuation of the online medium as a key element in social change, but I would not imagine this is a belief or orientation that everyone in the World Cafe community shares. The shared focus here is, rather, a belief about the power of conversation, or dialogue, and most World Cafes are held in a face to face format.

Many of us have been exploring the World Cafe process online for a few years now, however, and I think we've proven that we can reach the same depth and intimacy and successfully access the collective wisdom in a group through this medium as well.

I'd love to hear more of your thinking on this subject, and suggest you start a conversation about it to see whether there is interest in the larger community.

You can do that in the main conversation area, under Ideas and Passions, and/or you might do it in the group for online World Cafes (if you want a group that's more focused in the online sphere).

I'm so glad you're here!
