WHAT IS AN ONLINE CAFÉ?

Basically it is a normal World Café conversation. The tables consist of conference calls between four to five persons. We are gathering in groups of 4 or 5 and all of us are discussing the same questions. The rounds will be longer than in a live café because the communication is a little slower when we can’t see each other.

The design and the preparation of the café is very similar to a live café. We will share the purpose and the desired outcomes before the café will start.

We will change the virtual tables after each round, so you are going to meet different people of our team.

There is another important difference to a live café: because of the limitations of Skype, you will be pre-assigned to a table and invited in by the Table Host, rather than joining a table on your own. That is why we have to know in advance who will be going to participate.

We are going to have a few rounds. There might be a spoken harvest at the end, but it could be a harvest via chat as well, depending on the number of participants.

After the café, we are going to make a summary to document our conversation and to harvest the results of the conversation and make that available to others who couldn’t join us.

PURPOSE / INTENT
Starting to get connected
Gain experience with Online Cafés as a community
Initiate the inquiry on dialogue, leadership and community

DESIGN:
20.00 – 20.15: Welcome (chat function / conference call)
20.15 – 20.45, Round 1:
What relations do you see between dialogue, leadership and community?
20.50 – 21.20, Round 2:
What would you like to see emerge in relation to the European Salon?
21.25 – 22.00, Harvesting: What have you been talking about?

TABLE HOSTS
The table hosts have more important roles in an online café than in a live café, in that they are setting up the conference calls at their »tables«, checking that the connections are stable, and providing the timing. They will be calling your small groups together for each of our two rounds of conversation.

For this first café, we’d like to invite people with experience with Skype to be a Table Host. If you’d like to be a Table Host., please contact Ulrich Soeder (who will be our overall Host for the World Cafe): [email protected]

Here is some technical information to get started for our Online Café:

We will be calling you via Skype for the Café at or a little before the start time of 20:00 CEST. Please be ready with your equipment set up in a space where you won’t be disturbed for two hours. If you need to take a break, or handle something during the event, please mute yourself and let us know via text chat.

PARTICIPATION
If you know anyone else who wants to participate, we need to know their skype name asap. Send those to [email protected]

Please let us know ahead of time if you will not be participating by sending an email to [email protected]

SKYPE ACCOUNT
As you may have guessed, we are using SKYPE to hold this online Cafe. You will need to have a working Skype account, and your host and table host will need to add you to their contact list ahead of time, so please accept their requests.

HEADSET
You should use a headset and NOT the microphone that is built into your computer. This increases the sound quality of the connection very much. If you don’t have a headset yet, it costs very little – about 10 to 20 €.

PRACTICING SKYPE
If you are new to Skype, it might be a good idea to have some test calls before the Online Café will start to get familiar with the different functions of skype and your headset.

DURING THE ONLINE CAFE
Provide yourself food and something to drink for the time of the Online Café.

We will use both the Audio and Chat functions in Skype. The Chat function is similar to the tablecloths in a live café: we can leave our thoughts and notes on them, and everyone can read them during the conversation.

QUESTIONS
If you have questions, don’t hesitate to ask: [email protected]
He might even be able to answer some of them!
