Sharing Our Gifts and Privileges for a Better World

- a multigenerational workshop -

What unique gifts, powers and privileges do we bring to this world? How can we face the realities of the social and environmental crises of our times, without being overwhelmed and without turning numb? What would it look like to bring our lives and our resources into alignment with our highest values? How can we grow in our physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual health?

With the foreclosure crisis, healthcare gridlock, increasing warfare, tragedy in Haiti, and so much more, it can be hard to feel hopeful about the future. And yet, now, more than ever, each of us is being called to step up and contribute what we can to shift the direction of our world and unfold new possibilities. As the Hopi saying goes, “We are the ones we've been waiting for.”

YES! and our co-host, World Café, invite you to participate in a day-long workshop entitled “Sharing Our Gifts and Privileges for a Better World”. The workshop is an opportunity for each of us to engage in authentic conversations about who we are, our struggles and hopes, our gifts and resources, and the changes we'd like to see in the world.

For the last 20 years, YES! has been conducting programs with young people, which focus on the intersection of personal, interpersonal and systemic change. This daylong workshop is meant to give a taste of our week-long Youth Jams program and is open to people of all ages and backgrounds.

We welcome to the workshop anyone who desires to make a difference with their lives, who feel that they have some gift or privilege (whether through earning, luck, inheritance, education, skills to share, public attention, professional position, or any other self-defined way) and who are willing to share honestly about some of the crucial issues in their lives and our world.

We hope to create a context in which we can take off masks, be authentic, and, in the process, expand our sense of self, of community and of hope. In fact, taking the time to slow down and take stock can be one of the most radical things one can do today, to make a real difference.

“Sharing Our Gifts” will run from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm. Over the course of the day, we will engage in a variety of activities to examine our life journeys, our diverse identities, our relationships, our sense of generosity, and our visions of a better world.

We ask participants to bring their own lunches – and, if you can, something to share; snacks and drinks will be provided. And, we invite people to contribute to the workshop on a sliding scale of $5 to $200. All donations to YES! are tax-deductible.

Thank you for sharing your observations about the congruency--it is heartwarming to witness the alignment taking place in multiple ways and multiple venues around the world. The power of collective intelligence has been emerging for some time, and there seems to be convergence all around. For myself, I leave these experiences curious about the impact they have on me, as well as what and how they will ripple out through me, i.e., how can I be a channel for what is meaningful and steward-full?

Barbara - I am struck by the similarity and relevance of the 'collective wisdom stances' to my experience of world cafe and the power of conversational leadership
- Deep listening
- Suspension of certainty
- Seeing whole systems / seeking diverse systems
- Respect for others / group
- Welcoming all that arises
- Trust in the transcendent
I was left mulling on the various social fields that I am a part of and how my presence influences them.

Hello Beth - I will be at the BASoL meeting on Friday. Thanks for mentioning the meeting on this site.

The Collective Wisdom work - I participated in a study (back in 2000) and I know Tom Hurley, who is a central player in the World Cafe Community, in addition to Juanita & David have been contributors and supporters of this work - so, YES, if any of you are curious, please join us this Friday.

Beth - I hope to see you there! Andrea
