Welcome to the European Salon online!

Hello to all of you!

The European Salon is continuing to evolve. We are going to host our 3rd meeting in Eggensbach, near Nürnberg at www.auf-nach-egensbach.de January 12 -15, 2012.

INVITATION to the 3rd EUROPEAN SALON

With the title:

»Dialogue and Leadership - Action Learning for Emerging Communities«

In the midst of our rapidly changing and challenging environments, our awareness of a complex and interdependent world is growing. Communities themselves are evolving: We are entering a new phase of community with rules, roles and opportunities for individuals and groups never seen before. How are we shaping the communities we live in and how are they shaping us?

How can we best engage body, mind, soul and spirit to take wise decisions in the face of uncertainty on individual and collective levels? How can we build on the experience and good practice that is taking place already in businesses and societies around the globe? What might be our local contribution in shaping our world in a way to be a great place to live for all and for future generations to come?

We invite you: Members and leaders of economical, political, cultural and spiritual communities who are willing to share their experiences, inspire each other and explore together how best to engage Action Learning for Emerging Communities!

Your active participation is key – your questions, your wisdom, your perspectives! We provide an opportunity for slowing down to speed up – through mindful action inquiry, deep listening to (y)our questions and stories, experiential learning, dialogue and ... celebration.

Our Intention
The overarching intent of the European Salon that we had crafted two years ago for the first Salon in Reichenau an der Rax in Austria remains unchanged:

»To host a sustainable gathering space in Europe for dialogue practitioners with diverse professional backgrounds

using different modes of knowing for an in-depth exploration

of the kind of communities we need to build in order to face today’s global urgent challenges

and the roles of dialogue and leadership in inspiring, coordinating and effecting individual and collective action«

We continue our inquiry! This group is the online gathering space for those who are interested in the topics of the European Salon. Your contribution is welcome!

Perhaps if we are going to make it through the eco-crises, we'll all need to learn to dance to a new tune and with new movements. Perhaps the next European Salon will be a combination of deep reflection and the dancing of souls. A possibility?

And Charles.....what a lovely presentation of the Bangalore groupwork. It immediately grabs my interest and attention! Finally, the future on one piece of paper. Wow!

It seems to me, that pressing questions are being answered by opening new questions!

Thanks for this!

What a powerful image, Ulrich! Alien, yet familiar. Strange, yet friendly. I would like to meet this being and discover what it is like on the other side...

Thanks for sharing!

Dear Chris,

thank you so much for sharing your reflections on being a guest. After the Salon we have been guests in Venice and during the Biennale we saw a wonderful video installation in the Polish pavillion – on being guests ... the picture is taken from this installation:

Take care, and I'm looking forward being your guest again!

The European Salon - Next Steps - Enhanceability Cafes?

Weather Copenhagen is successful or not, we're going to have to radically adjust so much in life on this little planet. Business-as-usual is not an option. Might we use our community and talents to help one another understand at a deeper level the dynamic interrelationships between the Eco-Crises coming our way?

This would be for schools, companies, NGOs and governmental agencies. We need to mobilize a new spirit of appreciate for the opportunity to be on this planet and in so doing, to use the resources so much more wisely.

While teaching in an MBA program in Bangalore, my 50 students, in teams of our, prepared twelve posters on the different eco-crises. We then held an Enhanceability Cafe (so we could begin to value one another and the planet) with a different poster at each table. As people rotated in 20 minute cycles, they began to "grok" the challenge. It was truly amazing.

The enclosed attachment show the Cafe and on the second page you can see the posters in miniature. The posters need updating, but we have a good start. Any interest in helping to develop this further?Reflections on the Multiple-Interrelated Eco-Crises-Nov.5, 2009.pdf

Chris, what great lessons you are sharing - and they touch so deeply on our themes of community, leadership and dialogue. Ilona is so right to respond in such an open and warm way and I can only echo this feeling. Even though we are separated by many miles, the distance doesn't really matter. Thanks for being you in such an authentic way! Same for John

Thank you for sharing your deep insights. You've hosted me already several times, and I loved these times inbetween the gatherings, having breadfeast, cooking together more than the meetings itsself. May be it's a good reminder about the essence of Worldcafe, which is about hosting. You were a perfect host to me: Thank you, I hope sometimes I may host you.

Hello to all out in the virtual community - As some of you know I have been and will continue to be "in flux" until we can get back to Colorado and into our home in mid-December. for almost a month now - we have had no real home and we have been staying with and celebrating with some beautiful friends and family in the DC area. these amazing people are allowing us to stay in their homes eat their food and be at home with them.

This is quite exceptional - to always be a guest and I have a new appreciation for those who have been out of home, or displaced as a result of a natural disaster (Katrina comes to mind), or for economic reasons (homeless in our cities). What an interesting thing community is as I leave in this very transient and temporary space(s). First - community is demanding - they expect alot at t ime when my resources are very limited, my intenet connections not so healthy and so much more dirving thean I am used to. This is not a criticism - but an observation - to have community - you need a home so you have a well-spring you can give from - not just take from the community. How hard it is to be a giving member without a home...

Second the dialogue has been rich and beautiful - so even in the transience, I have found intimacy, caring, tears, hugs and big compassion and passion from those whose homes we have , and have not invaded. Dialogue takes time, and in this transience place -becuase we are the perpetual guest - we have good conversation.

Last, it has taken realu humility to ask for help. What a terrific leadership lesson. I need other people and they are willing to be there and they are.

I say to each of you - if you are ever in this same place - my door, beds and kitchen are warmly open to you. The blessings I have received in realtime and virtually over the past month are sustaining me and helping me see the light at the end of my tunnel, and that home and heart - is a product of stability, commitment and some permanence in order to contribute.

for this and for you - I am thankful....Chris

Hi all, hello from Venice!

I spend some days with my family here in Venice to relax after a few very rich and intense days in Reichenau an der Rax during the European Salon.

Yesterday we spend the afternoon in Murano. This is where the Venetian glass comes from. Have a close look to these flowers!

The last days are resonating in me. We are going to share experiences and stories from our work soon – I'll have to photograph all of the recordings before posting them here – probably sometimes next week.

The story of the European Salon will continue to unfold in some way or another. If you want to link in and be involved, you're welcome.

Cheers to you all,

Ulrich
